Why does one little thing set the tone for the day?

Why does it seem to set the tone for your entire day when a few things go wrong first thing in the morning?

Yesterday morning started with banging my knee hard enough to bleed on the corner of the cedar chest at the bottom of the bed and followed by dropping a full jar of mayo - uncovered - on the kitchen floor while making hubby's lunch. While cleaning up the mayo, I saw that our geriatric, newly incontinent cat peed in the dining room.

I finally made it to work where things like that continued. Weird phone calls, dropped supplies, and a very long meeting. I finally escaped from the hospital almost two hours late only to be accosted in the parking lot by my least favorite salesman. He had e-mailed the previous day asking for a meeting but I told him that I wouldn't have time and would need to reschedule for the next time that he was in town. He decided to stop in anyway just to see if I might have time and started to ask me questions while standing in the parking lot - in the rain - after I told him that I was leaving late and in a hurry.

This morning started at 0430 by sitting in cat barf on the sofa. I had to laugh.

One person's trash...

There used to be a yarn factory hidden behind large pine trees at the edge of our residential neighborhood. When it closed last year, someone decided to open an antique/consignment shop in the large space.

I drive by it every day on my way back and forth from work but had never stopped in until last Saturday. It was an interesting mix of antiques, consignments of some really nice furniture, and UVA overstock of old dorm furniture and office equipment. I found something that I've been looking for for years - an old library card catalogue.

The one that I found is definitely showing it's age and hard use, but it's the perfect piece to use to store all of my small sewing and craft supplies. 72 drawers to fill with thread, beads, and all manner of other supplies for the different crafts that I like.

After moving some other furniture around, it has found a home in my sewing room.

Fun at home for July 4th

My other half, normally fun, friendly, and unfailingly supportive, has been a bit of a bear the last week or so.

We had a relaxing Sunday morning, watching the news followed a big cooked breakfast. Nice and homey. I worked on the galley proof of my latest for a while and then finally decided to take a shower and get the day started.

I was just getting out of the shower when I heard my phone ring with the other half's ring tone. I was surprised since I thought that he was home, but ran out to the living room, still dripping and bare. Rather sheepishly, he asked me to come rescue him and, confused since I thought that he was still home, I asked him what I was supposed to do to rescue him.

Still sheepishly, he explained that he was at the car wash with my car and he had locked the keys in the car. He was trying to surprise me and make up for his recent bad mood.

My other half's profession? Locksmith. He spends most of his days rescuing people who lock their keys in their houses, offices, or cars.

The Sallee Rovers

The Sallee Rovers (Pirates of the Narrow Seas, #1) The Sallee Rovers by M. Kei

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I loaded the The Sallee Rovers on my iPad for my flight back from the West coast and, whether seat-belted in or not, I was glued to my seat by the riveting story. It was wonderfully entertaining and interesting.

The Sallee Rovers, after detailed beginning, is a fast-paced story with wonderfully real characters. They react naturally to the events around them and I was never thrown out of the story by any of them doing something that didn't fit what we knew about them up to that point. That's not to say, however, that they didn't grow and change. That was one of my favorite things about the book - seeing the changes in Peter as he grew to accept himself.

The fight and battles scenes were gripping and more than once I found myself leaning forward in my seat as I read as quickly as possible to find out what happened next.

The end of the book left me wishing for more tales of Peter Thorton and I was very happy to see that there are other books in the series.

I'm very happy that M.Kei was unhappy with what he was reading and decided to try his own hand at a novel!
